東日本大震災被災地の中学生をメルボルンに招待するプロジェクト

メルボルン研修を終えて

　　私は、メルボルンの学校に行き、中高一貫ということで、学校が広く、生徒の人数が多いと感じました。生徒は、みんな明るく、フレンドリーなのが印象的でした。日本は授業中に真剣な雰囲気ですが、オーストラリアの学校は、明るく楽しくやっているように感じました。また、みんな積極的に授業に参加していました。

　学内では、みんな積極的に声をかけてくれるので、私自身、始めはドキドキして不安でしたが、すぐに打ち解け、とても楽しい学校生活でした。また、みんな日本語がとても上手で驚きました。（注：この学校は、日本語を第２外国語としています。）なので、私も絶対、英語を上手に話せるようになりたいと思いました。短い期間でしたが、充実した学校生活を送ることができました。

　ホームスティでも、始めは自分の英語に自信がなく、何を話せばいいのか不安でしたが、ホストファミリーの方がやさしく受け入れてくれて、とても安心しました。だんだん話ができるようになってきて、ホストファミリーから、「英語が上手になったね！」　と言われたのが、とても嬉しかったです。

　食事についても、来る前は、日本の食事が当たり前に思っていましたが、オーストラリアのシンプルな食事を体験して、日本は、食文化に恵まれていると改めて感じ、そのありがたみが分かりました。

　また、英語についても、前は、「どうせ英語は少ししか使わない・・。」と思っていましたが、今回の経験を通して、英語はとても大切だな、と思いました。将来に役立つ大切な言葉だと思いました。

　今回の体験を通して、コミュニケーションの大切さを感じました。例え言葉が伝わらなくても、顔の表情、ジェスチャーで理解してもらえることもあります。　日本人は、感情をあまり表に出さないので、外国人の感情表現はとてもいい参考になりました。　そして、日本ではあいまいな表現が多いですが、外国では、Yes/ Noをはっきり言うこと、断る、頼むなど、はっきり言うことなど、いい勉強になりました。

　英語をもっと勉強して、ぜひ海外に留学したいと思いました。　次にこのプロジェクトに参加する方へのアドバイスは、英語ができなくても身振り手振りで伝わるので、消極的にならず、言いたいことはきちんと言う事、そしてとにかくその滞在を楽しんで欲しいと思います。

　たくさんの支えてくれた方がいたからこそ、今回の貴重な体験をすることができました。　この企画に携わってくれた、すべての方に感謝ちで一杯です。本当にありがとうございました。

The first thing I noticed when arriving at the Melbourne high school was the huge size of the school campus and its total student number. This is due to the difference in the Australian school system. In Melbourne, high school caters for grades 7 to 12 students, this is equivalent to Japanese junior (Chugaku) and high (koukou) school students. The students here were friendly and cheerful and they were actively participating in the lessons. Their fun seeking attitude in the class is a contrast to the seriousness of the classroom atmosphere in Japan.

In the beginning I was a little nervous, however my shyness quickly dissolved with many students coming up to chat with me, which helped me to relax. I was very surprised by their fluent Japanese, which this school offers as an academic subject. This makes me determined to improve my English skill. I had great time at the school.

The same happened with my host family. I was again very shy and nervous with my English, but the host family accepted me warmly and encouraged me to talk. I felt confident in speaking to them. My host family gave me a compliment about my English becoming so much better. I feel so happy about my improvement.

The food situation was interesting and different. I did not think too much about what we eat in Japan everyday, but I now feel very grateful for the variety and high quality of Japanese food, compared with the simple meals provided in Australia.

The stay in Melbourne also changed my view of English as a language. My appreciation for English before this trip was low. I did not give much importance to English being useful to my life and to me, but this trip made me realise how useful it could be for my future.

Through the experience in Melbourne, I also learnt the importance of communication. Facial expression and gestures can be effectively used for mutual understanding beyond language. Japanese people do not show their emotions, and seeing how the other people express themselves using those non-verbal expressions was really eye opener for me. I was very impressed with the difference in showing willingness, for example: Japanese people tend to express their opinion in an in-direct way, but here, people do not hesitate to state their opinion clearly, they are not afraid of saying Yes or No, asking for help if need it, or refuse if they don't like something.

Now I desire to study English more and take up another study experience abroad in the future. I would like to give my advice to the students who are considering taking up this Melbourne cultural exchange trip. You should not be shy or be discouraged, even though you may not be so confident about your English. Speak up about what you feel, enjoy the time spent in Melbourne, use your non-verbal expressions, and then you will be understood and warmly welcomed.
